Their first unmissable show is with William Tyler and Hiss Golden Messenger, a stunning double bill of American songwriters, coming next Monday, October 3rd at Miss Peapod's. Sorry for the late notice, I'm still settling in to my new living quarters in Brighton.

tickets are £7.50 from Jam and Miss Peapod's 01326 374424

before I get on with it I would encourage anyone on this list who wants to get updates from bSHO to either use Facebook to connect with them here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/BSHO-Presents/282788228413843 or email them on bshopresents@gmail.com to say you want to join their mailing list. Coming up they have mighty American psychedelicists Eternal Tapestry (late Oct) and Date Palms (early Nov).

Here is William Tyler

William Tyler is well-known for his work as part of Lambchop and Silver Jews and has just released the album ‘Behold The Spirit’. His recent tour dates supporting Yo La Tengo caused a whole heap of excitement in the US, and now he’s coming to spread the magic over here.

Reactions to the album have been widely euphoric, Pitchfork giving it a Best New Music tag and talking of “the grace and elocution of Behold the Spirit, the debut from young Nashville guitarist William Tyler. Arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more, it accepts Fahey’s legacy while escaping its shadow. Moreover, it’s simply a joy to hear.”
A unique singer and writer of songs, Hiss Golden Messenger has impressed music critics across the board, from David Bowie, to Uncut magazine, to The Independent and even the Daily Mirror. The following quotes don’t even say the half of it…

“Bad Debt recalls the ragged blues and front-porch musicians of eras long since gone and modern folk legends like Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Iron & Wine, only with more edge than Sam Beam, more understatement than Will Oldham, and with a little Hank Williams tossed in for good measure” Mezzic.com

“Mystical country. An eerie yellowing photograph.” David Bowie

“Fans of Will Oldham and Bill Callahan will find much to admire” The Guardian

“a thing of gentle charm & unmistakable cosmic American beauty. It is, for those of us who delight in the likes of Iron & Wine, our first contact with a new & wonderful songwriter” Independent
Red River Dialect are a five piece band based in Falmouth and Penryn. They have just recorded the follow up to their 2010 album ‘White Diamonds’ (which was recorded whilst the band were a duo), and will play the new album in full as this will be their last gig for some time. The new sound has been compared to Calexico, Dirty Three, Fairport Convention and Neil Young as it incorporates amp driven fiddle & harmonica and electric guitars (stacked with delay and reverb) with the heavy groove laid down by insistent drums and bass that fuses lo-fi dub, psych rock and folk. All this hangs from the skeleton of the songwriter’s brooding voice and acoustic guitar. There’s some swamp, some high plains, some cloud dancing, the odd forest fire and some street fighting.
“beautiful” 10 tracks you have to hear, NME

“akin to Callahan in lyrical deftness , his delivery occasionally flares with a recognisably Smog-y twang” Song of the Day, The Line of Best Fit

“some nice scrapey Warren Ellis-style fiddle playing and it's got this lovely hazy Eastern feel. They sort of remind me of Calexico in places” Norman Records
When Frank Fairfield visited last September he left in his wake a sold out crowd entranced to the rhythms of his body, a body born to channel music and the mannerisms of a time that is seemingly not present. When he departed I remarked that it would be unlikely that he would be coming back soon, convinced as I was that he would be on Jools Holland come Christmas. It could be Franks conviction to “playing for the people” that sees him return to Falmouth, to play a set at The Poly on Sunday June 5th, but it is most likely part of the way of being he articulates in the video above. Here’s another.

Frank has been playing banjo, fiddle and guitar since the age of three. The last few years have found him busking on the streets of Los Angeles as well as opening for Fleet Foxes and Cass McCombs on tour. He has a new album of self penned songs just out on Tompkins Square and is travelling Europe to play them. The wonder of his performance is hard to explain – the heavy cotton suits, the starched shirts, the sweat pouring of his brow, the chuckles and hoots… all of these could add up to a caricature. But to me Frank just seems like someone who has found himself dedicated to a way of being that values dignity, spirit, manners and song. If that seems out of place in our times, then let us be out of place with him.

In support we have Simon Drinkwater, whose acoustic guitar playing mixes delicate determination, bursts of fiery improvisation and intuitive explorations of texture. His voice is as three dimensional as the emotional aspects he depicts, and to hear him play the Poly auditorium has long been an intention of mine.Lono Presentshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12174446756808212329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3367436934010831026.post-72093660215304594122011-05-15T08:32:00.000-07:002011-05-21T04:22:00.213-07:00Six Organs of Admittance - May 31 Miss Peapodssolo acoustic, with support from Colour Sun
Six Organs of Admittance is the remarkable psych-folk of California born guitarist Ben Chasny, who is also known as a member of Comets on Fire and Rangda and for his inclusion on Devendra Banhart’s legendary “freak folk” compilation The Golden Apples of the Sun. The Drag City label (also home to Joanna Newsom, Bonnie Prince Billy, Bill Callahan) have just released his latest album ‘Asleep on the Floodplain’ which Mojo gave four stars, calling it “a mind altering missive from rustic America” whilst The Quietus described it as “winding, bonfire-smoked folk”. Uncut called it “a very intimate, fireside record”. He is touring the UK and Europe to play it live, solo on acoustic guitar. Colour Sun are a Falmouth duo who conjure distinct melodies from fingerpicked acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, harmonium & crisp vocal harmonies. Taking influence from the Brit folk axis of Drake, Martyn & Jansch they also invoke Malian desert drift. Norman Records recently gave their ep’s “blissed out psychedelic folk” 5 stars, here they are playing a song from their forthcoming album.
This is the first time that the crisp and dreamlike music of Damon and Naomi has made its way to Cornwall in the flesh. Advance purchase of tickets is recommended - They are £9 either from Jam, Falmouth/Miss Peapod’s 01326 274424 or secure online by clicking here. Please note: Doors are at 9pm, music will begin around 945 and finish around midnight.

The duo have attracted critical acclaim ever since their first musical outings in the late 80’s as two thirds of Galaxie 500 (of whom John Peel was a huge fan). After the groups demise they signed to Sub Pop and released a string of albums as a duo before beginning a long and fruitful collaboration with various members of Japanese psych-folk-rock group Ghost. It is Michio Kurihara, Ghost guitarist and sometime member of Boris, who became intrinsic to their new sound and he will be playing with them at the show here in Cornwall. Here’s a song from the forthcoming album ‘False Beats and True Hearts’ entitled ‘And You Are There’

Damon & Naomi with Chris Marker - And You Are There from The Wire Magazine on Vimeo.
In a unique and exciting twist they have also coaxed Richard Youngs to accompany them on tour, playing an opening set with Damon on drums. Youngs is a Scottish musician and songwriter who has probably released more songs than he has made live performances. It is pretty much impossible to sum up his recording career, so diverse it is. He travels between the emotional, the physical and the cerebral and uses every tool at his disposal, so here are two different elements of his remarkable talent.

And here are some words from the press.

“the duo's literate, atmospheric music is sounding more prescient than ever, and they operate at top form on this, their first album of new material in five years… Ghost guitarist Michio Kurihara appears as a virtual third group member, and his impeccable electric guitar contributions are here fully integrated into the immovable foundation of Damon and Naomi's earthy, intimate folk, creating the most satisfying and sheerly transfixing work of the twosome's career.” 8/10 Pitchfork

“Damon and Naomi met in Boston's Galaxie 500, kick-starting a whole school of Velvet Underground derived melancholia in the late 80's. Subsequently they've recorded extensively as a duo in late 60's West Coast singer-songwriter mode, and are lynchpins of an international community of like-minded musicians” Sunday Times

“Since the early 90s, Richard Youngs has been engaged in a dogged journey that has pushed out to the very edges of songwriting. Operating somewhere between oblique sound-collages, performance art and at times a mutant experimental pop music, his work and numerous collaborations document a serially prolific talent that borders on the obsessional.” BBC

This means that lots of bands and labels produce limited quantities of unique releases, to be sold only in independent record shops on that day and days following.

For record geeks like me, this is immensely exciting. Jam, a record shop found at number 32 on Falmouths old high st, will be stocking around 70 of these unique and exciting artifacts from all manner of hardworking labels and bands. But! There will also be a live performance by Red River Dialect, and by Colour Sun at 2pm. These two bands have also produced a very limited split ep, in a nice card gatefold case. Two songs from each band making 25 minutes of fine Falmouth based music.

Here are Colour Sun playing a song that is not on the cd, and below you find a gizmo that plays the two Red River Dialect tracks. There'll be 50 copies at a very reasonable price.
William Tyler is well-known for his work as part of Lambchop and Silver Jews and has just released the album 'Behold The Spirit'. His recent tour dates supporting Yo La Tengo caused a whole heap of excitement in the US, and he's now he's coming to spread the magic over here.

Reactions to the album have been widely euphoric, Pitchfork talking of "the grace and elocution of Behold the Spirit, the debut from young Nashville guitarist William Tyler. Arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more, it accepts Fahey's legacy while escaping its shadow. Moreover, it's simply a joy to hear."

Michael Chapman began his career on the Cornish folk circuit in 1967. He signed to the Harvest label, home to Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and many others, recording four quasi-legendary albums. He was championed by John Peel in the 70s (who called the recently re-issued album ‘Fully Qualified Survivor’ his favourite of 1970) and the urge to tell the world about his music fell upon Jack Rose and No Neck Blues Band in the 00s. He has the double cd and booklet package 'Trainsong: Guitar Compositions 1967-2010' out on Tompkins Square in February, and Light In The Attic re-issue his classic 'Fully Qualified Survivor' in the same month.

He's already been rediscovered wholesale in the US courtesy of his Jack Rose and No Neck Blues Band connections, topped off by his extensive interview by fan Thurston Moore in Fretboard Journal in 2009, where Moore compared Chapman's style and influence with that of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Now the UK and Europe are catching up with this sudden explosion of excitement about him, and quite right too.

As Spencer Grady notes on the BBC Music site, "Just as John Fahey and Robbie Basho were belatedly sainted by a slew of avant-garde musicians eager to enrich their experimental fields with old primitive tradition, so the same enclave have reached out to embrace Yorkshire-born minstrel Michael Chapman."
"Baltimore's Arbouretum are singular on the stoner psych-rock scene. Due in large part to the vision of lyricist, frontman, and lead guitarist Dave Heumann, their sound is simultaneously sprawling, devastatingly heavy, sludgy, meandering, and mysterious." Allmusic.com
“vintage psych-blues riffs and mid-paced wig-outs burst forth from Arbouretum… Heumann has one of the most distinctive voices around, with a unique, heavy-folk feel to his grand, hymnal melodies…” The Guardian

“rough-hewn rock'n'roll that seems custom-made to be the soundtrack for some mythical peyote binge in the desert. The guitars are terrifically sludgy, the drums thunderously slow and the grooves combine steamroller momentum with psychedelic drift” The Observer

“it's stoner-folk-rock, like a heavier version of Midlake or an opiated Fairport” The Independent

“Baltimore’s Arbouretum have emerged heavier, moodier and better than ever… ‘When Delivery Comes’ sounds like Kyuss covering Richard Thompson while the distorted ‘Waxing Crescents’ is as satisfyingly unsettling as a metal Aphex Twin” UNCUT 4/5
The rantings and ravings above concern Arbouretum’s latest album, ‘The Gathering’ which just came out via Thrill Jockey records (also home to recent visitors Pontiak). The Baltimore based band have played in Cornwall once before, at a sold out show we put on at Miss Peapod’s in July of 2009 and it is with true and unhindered excitement that we welcome them back on March 19th.

Since the last visit they have had a few changes in their ranks – the second guitar has been replaced with synth, leaving singer and guitarist Dave Heumann’s growling chords and lucid fret work to mingle with the churning bass of Corey Allender. The new drummer plays with more weight and heft, anchoring the songs to a heavy groove while the melodies soar above – grandiose words I know, but all in the spirit of this curious music that mixes a light and spectral flight for the imagination with the raw earthy mechanics of Desert rock.

The support act is Red River Dialect, for whom I sing and play guitar, so forgive the reticence… we had a record out last November and some singularly fine voices of the music press said things like – “this has lingered with me for days… Beautiful” NME – “an album of quiet depths, an introspective account of a life lived” The Liminal

But those snippets don’t tell you much so click here to find another review and a free download of ‘Distant Man’, the opening song of our album. Having said all that we now have a drummer, a bass player and a whole albums worth of new songs so… we’re excited to play.

And here's one more video of Arbouretum, playing a track from the new album last November...
It’s been some time since a straightforward album by an acoustic songwriter really inspired me. Bad Debt, a cd of 9 striking songs by Hiss Golden Messenger finds HGM mainman Michael Taylor playing his acoustic guitar into an old tape-recorder and singing vivid lyrics of timeless emotional resonance with a voice that’s as soothing as it is cracked and worn. It was recorded somewhere in North Carolina, after Taylor left his San Francisco home for the East. Here is the full album available to stream through soundcloud.
This is the album that he will be promoting when he visits Penryn on a very short UK tour. He will be joined by Lono favourite Rick Tomlinson on some lead guitar now and then, Rick being familiar to some as the guitarist behind Voice of the Seven Thunders. Hiss Golden Messenger are getting a second release this year, a more fleshed out record called “Country Hai East Cotton”, for a dose of that check out the video below… We imagine Mr Taylor will be weaving a few of those tracks into the set.
All in all I am beyond excited – this guy combines soul-poetry and stunning melodies in a way that will outlive any short-lived scene. For instant fans let me just add that I have imported a handful of vinyl copies of a live album called Root Work, these are amongst the last 10 copies of this very limited 100 press, get in touch if you’d like one or more information.
Support comes from Falmouth duo Colour Sun. I've been waiting sometime for the opportunity to get Johnny and Fiona on the stage, many of you might have caught them before but for those who haven't I can only hint at what the songs give. Johnny plays fingerpicked guitar and sings in a world-softened way that recalls Nick Drake, while Fiona plays some of the most considered bass lines I've heard and sings additional (and sometimes primary) vocals with the haunt of the moors and coast about her. This is pretty close to a perfect line-up for me. Hope to see you there, these tickets might sell rather quick...Lono Presentshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12174446756808212329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3367436934010831026.post-59719693258105230602011-01-12T03:11:00.000-08:002011-01-12T03:28:15.151-08:00Three Bands at The Poly - Friday January 21stTo begin 2011 we here at Lono are bringing three of our favourite bands to the Poly stage where their evocative and inspiring sounds can have their full effect upon the audience. Minko, songstress & multi-instrumentalist, crafts beautiful idiosyncratic songs that arrive at your ears with a freshness that belies their often turbulent origins. Her lyrics expose her inner winding journey while her arresting voice moves from the murmur of a whisper to the urgency of an animal call. She delights in exploring diverse instrumentation, working with various musicians to combine flute & glockenspiel, cello & ukulele, alongside the piano, bass & guitar at the core of the sound. Part of the drama of the live show is in the making of these sonic landscapes, as each musician adds another element and Minko herself skips from one instrument to another, building up layers of sound then paring it all down again. The result is an intimately sensuous form of experimental folk music.
"a contemplative, unadorned folk record full of the implied presence of the Cornish badlands" The Liminal

“gorgeous new album… Perhaps akin to Callahan in lyrical deftness, his delivery occasionally flares with a recognisably Smog-y twang, but for the most part, he pointedly sings in his local brogue, a handsome blend of matter-of-fact dejection sung with a friendly raised brow.” The Line of Best Fit

“a contemporary folk recording with some very subtle psychedelic & dark country elements… brightly played yet sometimes somber songs filled with feeling & wonder. David has a likeable, plaintive voice and his style later on errs slightly towards Bill Callahan/Oldham territory... the atmosphere is captivating me. It will appeal to Americana fans but it’s not necessarily of that ilk.” 4 stars Norman Records

Playhouse

This is the debut gig for this band, having performed a scattering of shows as The Oar they are now born into 2011 as Playhouse – a deeply rhythmic blend of the romance of Fairport Convention and Pentangle with the determined groove of Krautrock mythology.

“Andrew Hockey had been sailing the high seas of the British folk scene for nearly a decade before hooking Mike Brett, the ex bassist of the ‘The Guild of the Furious Lion’. Their sound is an intoxicated blend of east meeting west kept afloat in a tempest of rhythm conjured by David Logon, ex ‘Lefthand’ drummer; truly a band fit for these wild parts. There is talk of another, Damien Shingleton of the ‘Screechy Badman’ fame joining this troupe, but this maybe just legend!”
You can listen to (and buy!) these albums using the gizmos on the right hand side of this page.

WIVES OF FARMERS - WIVES OF FARMERS

The first of them was the self-titled debut cd from Wives of Farmers. We dropped that at the end of July when the boys of WoF played an epic launch party set in Penryn. Lee Trewhela at the West Briton said it sounded like "Malkmus doing Death Valley 69 round at Will Oldhams house" which we took to mean Pavement/Sonic Youth/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy comparisons squeezed through the fine sieve of poetry. The folk at Norman Records gave it 4 stars and a prestigious "recommended" slot, saying...

"I couldn't hear this Wives of Farmers CD WELL enough so I had to sprint upstairs to enquire its identity cos it really touched something inside of me. These guys kick out a wicked laid-back old-skool indie rock with lots of dinky shapes & maths-y touches, coming in somewhere between Lazarus Clamp, Seachange, mid-period Clean & Life Without Buildings (without the mad lass chuntering on). This full length recording chugs along in quite a homely & DIY fashion (but not fashionably Lo-Fi thank god!) which totally adds to its effortless charm!"

RED RIVER DIALECT - WHITE DIAMONDS

The second came out only recently, so it doesn't yet know it's rightful place in the world. It's called White Diamonds and it's by Red River Dialect. You can listen to that via the player on the right, this one also copped some Norman Records love...

“a contemporary folk recording with some very subtle psychedelic & dark country elements... he fills his brightly played yet sometimes somber songs with feeling & wonder. An occasional electric steals into the mix & there’s also some harp action to be had. David has a likeable, plaintive voice and his style later on errs slightly towards Bill Callahan/Oldham territory. The playing throughout is full & most engaging… the atmosphere is captivating me... It will appeal to Americana fans but it’s not necessarily of that ilk.” 4 stars Norman Records
